Memphis Orpheum Theatre History and Background

The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis , Tennessee made its humble beginnings as the Grand Opera House in 1890. As one of the first buildings on Main Street , it was lauded as the South's Finest Theatre. In 1907 the Grand Opera House joined forces with the Orpheum's circuit of vaudeville shows, and for nearly two decades sustained itself in this manner.

In 1923 a fire destroyed the theatre in the middle of a strip-tease show performed by Blossom Seeley, and for five years the theatre sat. Then, in 1928 the Orpheum that we know today was built at a mere cost of $1.6 million dollars. The new Orpheum was double the size of the Grand Opera House. From 1976 the Orpheum ran as a movie theater, but it was a brief interlude to Memphis Tennessee 's famous theatrical history, and lasted just a year.

In 1982 the Orpheum Theatre underwent a $5 million renovation to restore it to its original design of 1928. And it has maximized its entertainment potential many times over, hosting the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Dorothy Hamill, Tony Bennet, and the Goo Goo Dolls.

Today the Memphis Orpheum Theatre puts on 10-12 Broadway shows per year, each of them executed to perfection.
