The classic story unfolds of a lonely disfigured musical genius, referred to simply as the Phantom of the Opera, who inhabits one of the most famous Opera houses in France, the Opera Populaire, living in its seedy underbellies. It is 1911 and an auction takes place at the rundown Opera house. Raol, Vicomte de Chagny buys a music box. The next item on auction is a broken chandelier. The audience is then taken back to 1881, when the Opera Populaire was in pristine condition.

We are led through the magically tragic story of the Phantom of the Opera, young ballet dancer Christine Daae, an aging Opera diva named Carlotta, a much younger Raol, and a heavy-handed manager. Together we watch as The Phantom manipulates the theater cast and crew to put Christine in as the lead, where her voice blossoms continuously with each performance. It is a story of tragic love and human character.
