The story surrounding Rent is worthy of its own Broadway show, so unusual is its nature. Rent is a Rock Musical based on the opera La Boheme. With lyrics by Jonathan Larson, Rent made its first run at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. It made its official appearance two years later on January 25, 1996. Sadly, the writer and creator, Jonathan Larson, died the night before suddenly and would never get to see his creativity realized fully.

Since then Rent has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Drama for its controversial subjects and racially diverse cast. It ran for 12 years on Broadway and now tours world-wide and won a Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, as well as the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Book.

To date Rent has toured New York , Broadway, West End, and Australia , and is counting. The story of starving-artists and musicians fighting off life on Lower East Side New York and working with the effects of then-little-known illness AIDS is one that many relate to, no matter what walk of life you come from.
