New Orleans Orpheum Theatre History
The New Orleans Orpheum Theatre was tragically damaged in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Originally built in 1918, the Orpheum Theatre opened for vaudeville in 1921. Vaudeville soon declined, and many Orpheum's were converted into movie houses; the New Orleans Orpheum was no exception.
Until 1979 the New Orleans Orpheum Theatre served as a humble movie theater. Finally, due to disrepair, it was scheduled for demolition in 1979. However, it underwent $3 million in restorations instead, and a decade later it was the new host to the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Some would say the acoustics of the New Orleans Orpheum are so superior and fine it exceeds the Carnegie Hall. After Hurricane Katrina swept New Orleans , the Orpheum sat for two years, until Richard Weyand of Richard Weyand Properties bought the Orpheum Theatre for $¾ million. Currently a proud member of the National Register of Historic Places, Weyand will face some strongly-enforced restrictions as to how he may re-develop the theater. And until he does complete the renovations, the Philharmonic bounces around between several different venues, including Tulane University .
