Orpheum Theatre History
Like most Orpheum Theatre's, the Omaha Orpheum began as an 1800's playhouse that was acquired by the Orpheum Vaudeville Circuit. It made its humble beginnings in 1985 as the Creighton Theater, and before that it was the Withnell Building and served as army headquarters. The original theater contained 800 seats and on August 22, 1895 gave its very first performance called The Masqueraders.
Just three years later a nation-wide recession forced the Creighton's to sell to the Orpheum Vaudeville Circuit, where it was renamed the Creighton Orpheum. At the time, admission ranged between $.10 and $.50.
As the popularity of vaudeville waned, slowly Orpheum's were being converted into theatres that could accommodate cinema. In 1926 the old Orpheum was destroyed and the new Orpheum Theatre emerged on October 9, 1927, nearly 16 months and $2 million later. Nearly 3,000 attended the opening night. Dressed in gold and ivory with a 4,500 pound chandelier, the new Orpheum spoke of elegance and finery,
For 43 years the Orpheum would continue to host films and live performances. Then, from 1979 until 2002 the Orpheum Theatre was the Opera Omaha. Finally, in 2002, $10 million was put into the Orpheum to restore it to its original luster, converting it back to the Omaha Orpheum Theatre where it remains such today. Often referred to as the “golden palace” for its stunning gold and ivory décor, the Omaha Orpheum carries with it a strong sense of its past. Patrons understand the thousands to appreciate the theatre before them.
