Orpheum Theatre History
The Phoenix Orpheum Theatre, like most Orpheum's, was designed at the height of the vaudeville era in 1927 and was completed in 1929. Located in downtown Phoenix , the Orpheum Theatre originally cashed in at a total construction cost of $750,000. It was designed in a Mission/Spanish revival and originally included highly-detailed moldings, arches, and murals that added to the quality craftsmanship signature of that era.
In 1949 the waning theatre was converted into a Paramount Theatre as part of their national movie chain. And for the next 20 years the popularity of the Phoenix Orpheum Theatre would continue to decline as newer theaters with modern sound systems and larger screens entered the competition.
The Phoenix Orpheum was sold again in 1968 by James Nederlander for his U.S. chain of touring Broadway productions. After Nederlander comprehended the expenses needed to fully revive the Phoenix Orpheum, he leased the theater for Spanish films from 1977 until its next owner, in 1984.
After severe deteriorations made the Orpheum almost dilapidated, the City of Phoenix purchased the Orpheum in 1984. A year later it was inducted into the National Register of Historical Places. Another 12 years and $14.5 million later the Orpheum was re-introduced to society January 28, 1997. Carol Channing led a stunning performance of “Hello Dolly!” to commemorate the event. The renovations nearly doubled the size of the original Orpheum Theatre, and included an elevator, a new Wurlitzer pipe organ, an orchestra lift that adjusts to three levels, and a new lay-out was given to the floor so that audiences would have even better vision.
Today the Orpheum in Phoenix stands as one of the most outstanding entertainment venues in Phoenix , Arizona . With regularly hosted stage shows, plays, dance, music concerts, and private events, the Orpheum in Phoenix serves an important role in the City of Phoenix 's social infrastructure.
